Volatiles: everything we know (October 2026)

Every confirmed fact about Volatiles: announcement details, developer, platforms, press coverage and what is still unannounced as of October 2026.

10/11/2026 3 min read

Volatiles was announced on October 8, 2026 — three days before this page was last checked. Everything below is sourced from the announcement itself (Steam page, press release, trailer); anything unconfirmed is labelled as such. We update this page as new information lands.

The facts at a glance

  • Game: Volatiles
  • Developer: Team Instant Defeat (a newly established studio)
  • Publisher: 11 bit studios
  • Genre: Top-down action roguelike (Steam tags: Action, Adventure, Strategy)
  • Platform: PC via Steam
  • Players: Single-player only
  • Controller: Full controller support, including DualSense and DualShock
  • Release date: Not announced
  • Price: Not announced

What is the premise?

You fight alien hordes inside a nightmare in your own mind, building the battlefield as you go. Each death sends you back to a water-filled tank in a covert lab, where the researchers are watching — and something in your mind is learning. The official tagline: “every tile is important, and escaping with your sanity isn’t guaranteed.”

What has the publisher said?

The announcement press release (October 8) describes it as “a fast-paced, top-down action roguelike where you build your own battlefield to survive an invasion within your mind.” 11 bit studios announced it as a new title joining their publishing portfolio, alongside developers they are known for: this is a publishing deal, not an internal 11 bit production — Team Instant Defeat is the developer.

How much coverage has it gotten?

Reasonable day-one pickup for an indie announcement: Gematsu covered it with a full overview, CGMagazine ran an announcement piece, and the trailer is live on the 11 bit studios YouTube channel (roughly 13,000 views in the first three days, checked October 11). No release date was included in any coverage — several outlets explicitly note “release date not announced”.

What do the screenshots show?

Ten screenshots shipped with the announcement. We went through them and pulled out the mechanical details — the HUD, the combat, the tile selection screen — into two breakdowns: battlefield building and combat and waves. If you want the fastest read on how the game plays without watching the trailer, those pages are it.

What is still unknown?

  • Release date and window — none announced. Tracking details on our release date page.
  • Price and business model — no store price, no mention of DLC or editions.
  • Run length, difficulty options, accessibility features — none published.
  • Meta-progression specifics — “new knowledge” between runs is confirmed in concept; what it unlocks (weapons, perks, story) is not.
  • Console versions — PC only for now; no console announcement either way.
  • Demo or playtest — none announced; wishlisting on Steam is the only current action.

How do we know what we know?

Sources by page: the Steam store page (description, tags, features), the October 8 press release via GamesPress (premise, positioning), the announcement trailer on the 11 bit studios channel (tone, enemy design), and the ten official screenshots (mechanics). Every claim on this site that goes beyond those sources is explicitly labelled as analysis. If you spot something we got wrong, the Steam community hub is the fastest place to say so.
