What is Volatiles? The 11 bit roguelike, explained
Volatiles is a top-down action roguelike from 11 bit studios and Team Instant Defeat where you build the battlefield tile by tile. Here's the pitch.
Volatiles is a top-down action roguelike published by 11 bit studios and developed by Team Instant Defeat, announced on October 8, 2026. You fight alien hordes inside a nightmare, and — the hook — you build the arena itself, one tile at a time. If you know 11 bit’s catalogue (Frostpunk, This War of Mine, and their published roguelikes Children of Morta and Moonlighter), that pairing of grim premise and tight loop is exactly what this is.
What is the game actually about?
The official description frames it as a nightmare experiment inside your own mind: “every run sends you deeper into a nightmare experiment inside your own mind. Fight increasingly challenging alien hordes in arenas you create yourself. And when you fail… wake up in the cold, water-filled tank with new knowledge that might save your life next time.”
There is also a story frame: strangers in a covert lab are watching, and “whatever is growing in your mind is learning how to take control.” Whether that becomes an active antagonist system or stays atmospheric, we track it on our everything we know page.
What makes Volatiles different from other roguelikes?
Three things, as far as the announcement shows:
- You shape the arena. Each tile you place expands the battlefield — and tiles are not decorative: they carry contents and modifiers, some of which make the run harder on purpose (see our battlefield building breakdown).
- Failure is the progression. Dying sends you back to the tank with “new knowledge” — the classic roguelike meta-loop, framed as the lab collecting data.
- It is a hybrid by genre tags. Steam lists it as Action, Adventure and Strategy — the strategy half being the arena planning, not a separate mode.
What kind of roguelike is it — how hard, how long?
Not published yet. What the announcement material shows is a wave-based arena structure with escalating enemy levels, an in-run leveling system, perks and artifacts as the upgrade axes, and a between-run meta layer. If that reads like the Children of Morta family of action roguelikes rather than a bullet-hell, that is the right expectation — but treat run length and difficulty as open questions until reviews land. Our combat and waves breakdown walks through what the screenshots show.
Is Volatiles co-op?
No — Steam lists Single-player only, with full controller support (DualSense and DualShock included). There is no announced co-op or multiplayer mode. For context, that is deliberate in this genre: the arena-building choice economy gets messy with two players, and the lab-nightmare narrative is a solo story.
What platforms, and when does it come out?
PC via Steam, with a wishlist link live now. There is no release date — the announcement only says “in development”. Our release date tracker covers how to actually know when that changes.
Should you follow it now?
If you like 11 bit’s published roguelikes, arena/tower-defense hybrids, or the “analog sci-fi” aesthetic (think machinery, tanks, and CRT gloom — see the screenshots we break down), wishlist it and watch the Steam page. The developer is a brand-new studio, so the publisher’s track record is the quality signal to weigh. Everything confirmed so far is collected on everything we know.
